Chianti Classico: Festival of the pruner.

Chianti Classico: Festival of the pruner.

The Pruning Contest will take place on 29 February 2020 in Castelnuovo Berardenga (Siena) in the Chianti Classico region, which will award the best vine pruners in Italy. It will be the second edition after the great success of the first held in Franciacorta. The day is organized by Simonit & Sirch and will take place in the vineyards of Agricola San Felice, where classes on the Simonit & Sirch vine pruning method are also held.

There will be 100 pruners from all over Italy, who will face individual and team competitions; the public will be able to watch the pruning closely and the competitors will be judged by a jury of technicians.

The Pruning contest will be the main event of a day of celebration, open to all enthusiasts, families and interested parties, dedicated to the know-how of the vineyard. There will be many outline activities related to the agricultural world in addition to music and themed stalls.

It will be possible to meet the record mountaineer Simone Mori who will make short tours in his helicopter from which it will be possible to admire the beautiful hills of Chianti and Siena from above. There will also be sports performances: freestyle and acrodunking basketball by DAMOVE and artistic roller skating performance by world champion Lorenzo Guslandi. You will see demonstrations of cutting with ax, saw and chainsaw of the lumberjacks Mattia Berbenni and Michael Del Pin. It will be possible to attend local craftsmen intent on their trades and also work in the vineyard with traction horses.

You can also have a tasting of the delicious Chianti Classico thanks to the stations set up in the vineyard and also several truck-food that will sell local specialties.

Activities for the little ones.

Some rows of the vineyard will be reserved for children for the “Wannabe a pruninguy” area, marked by giant colored pencils; each child will choose and plant a vine cutting and write his nameon it, thus creating a symbolic and auspicious vineyard. There will also be other activities for children such as a comfortable horse-drawn carriage ride and educational visits to the Orto Felice: a vegetable garden of the San Felice farm which involves some young people with disabilities and the elderly in the area.
